Ok it's time to throw up the middle finger to all the foriegn oily ********* and US refinery thugs. I know some of you are paying more, but for me 2.50 per gallon is total B.S! Although my old 94' Toyota Xtra cab gets around 24 MPG hwy, I'd still rather be riding something to work that gets at least 40mpg. And preferably I'd like that ride to be a motorcycle.

Thing is I've got a nice 04' Ultra that I want to keep a long time. So I don't want to rack up a bunch of miles on it just going to work. So I'm thinking about buying an older model Sportster. A bike that doesn't bother me if it gets lots of miles on it, gets dirty or rained on all the time. So my question is does the 883 get much better mileage than the 1200? Or are they about the same? Anyone have a tip on which model years are the best?

IMO, if we could convince everyone to get on a bike to ride to work instead of taking the "earth mover" it might help get us out of the gas gouging shitt someday.

Thanks.

See, this really ticks me off. I put the Stage I in, and my mileage dropped from 50 to 30-35! And my local service dept. S.U.C.K.S!!!!! I gotta find someone to take a look at it.

 I've been thinkin' the same kinda thing. I like keeping my Fatboy pristine and I've already put more than 6K on her in 8 months (ok, I'm a poser, so fukkin' what?) and I really liked the '04 sporty I had before the fatty. I'm thinkin' the best deal is an '04 883 because it's rubbermounted and would move my azz as fast as I need to go. I think you can get one around here for about $5.5K. They are cheaper (advertised anyway) than the "collector's items" '03 hundredth anniversary special jobbers (what BS) and a smoother ride. I've seen 10 year old sportys advertised for no less than $5K so I think the newer, rubbermount would be a better buy. Mileage? My stage 1 well tuned/jetted '04 1200 got 43-48 mpg depending on how I rode it. I figure a re-piped, re-jetted 883 would get 50+ as a commuter. If you really want fabulous mileage, get a Suzuki gs500f. My son rides one, pretty upright riding position, quick as a cat, around $4K for a low mileage '04, maintenance free, and 65-70 mpg. On second thought, I can't see myself riding one, I'd go for a sporty. . .

I get between 43 and 54 on my 1200C. No way will I ever make 60, though. So maybe 883s are a bit more fuel efficient.

Its the roads we ride...no traffic. Also, if your in the carb, look at the hole in the bottom of the bowl. Its the passage to the accelerator pump. The smaller the hole the more out put from the pump, EVERY time you twist the throttle. If the hole is to large the effectivness of the pump is lost.
I mention this because I've see that hole about the size of a pin prick. The casting had not been cleaned up/checked.-2$en#e-

It's probably not to populor on this forum, but when I was sick of paying over $2.00/gallon for gas I bought an '81 Yamaha XS400 for $50.

Fixed some things on it, put on a new tire and I got a total of $200 in it. 50 MPG everywhere I go. It's not fast, or pretty. Since I live on gravel it works great! And I never have to drive a car:woohoo: , thats worth stooping to a metric bike!

Look for a 99~02 883. There is a 02 883 with 3K miles bone stock in mint shape for 5K hear in town. 5K is the norm from 95 up so why not get a newer ride? Anyone getting less than 45MPG city witha 883 is WAY rich! Lean those sucker up. With my 883 before I went 1200, I loged 60 MPG two up! Stage one! Even with the 1200 conversion (ported heads & S/E ingition) I would get 55MPG one up Hwy. The 883's are under powered and the 1200 upgrade is the easy way to make it right.

An 883 should get at least 6-7 more miles to the gallon on average than a 1200, but alot depends on how you drive. I once got 63mpg on my 883

Thanks for the replies. I did a little research through the day in the local classfieds online. Found a few later model 888's for around 5k.

As much as doing math gives me a severe migraine, I decided to crunch some #'s. My 94' Toyota Xtra Cab 4cyl gets around 24mpg avg. I rack up 170 miles per week going to work. So with the Yota I'm about using about 7 gallons per week @ 2.50gal = $17.50 per week in gas. If I were to get a Sporty and speculated conservatively that I would get 50mpg driving 170 miles per week I would use around 3.4 gallons per week. 3.4 gallons @ 2.50 per gallon = 8.50 in gas. I would save $9.00 per week or roughly $36.00 per month compared to taking the truck. $30.00 of that $36.00 savings would go to insure the Sporty. So now I'm left with $6.00.

SOB! I just can't win. Maybe I need to shop for a G-damn bicycle!

Went to Myrtle Beach last year and got 62.7 mpg on my 1200S. Remember, no limp wristing the throttle. If it won't idle at stop signs and lights, get it to a shop and have it fixed. :wootdnc:

Well, if they get that kind of fuel economy, that's one big advantage for the Sportster! I've been consistently getting 35-38 mpg on my stage 1 05 Dyna. I'll live with it, but at $3.50 for a gallon of gas, I'd sure rather it be in the high 40's!

My 04 has stock pipes right now. Will my mileage drop if I install cycle shacks slip ons? I'm not planning on jetting the thing at all.

what kind of average speeds are we talking about?

My 04 FXD with slip ons, AC, 46 slowjet and sportster needle gets 48 mpg at 65mph. If I bump it up to 75-80 mileage drops to around 40-42.

Unless you are really hauling ass, sounds like you may be running a little rich.
